Today
women are playing a meaningful role in society. Yet in Sri Lanka we
still hear of many negative influences on women’s development
that could be considered as amounting to violence against women. Some
of the contributing factors for this situation are traditions and beliefs
about women’s role, oppressive dowry system, male domination,
social discrimination, war, denial of right to higher education and
even the lack of knowledge about their rights on the part of women themselves.
As
a result women find themselves in a position where they are unable to
develop their talents and leadership qualities and are deprived of opportunities
to realize their true potential. Not only, there is a gross under-estimation
of their ability to express independent views and opinions and are often
unable to protect themselves against sexual violence. As a result, there
is mental frustration among women and a possibility of increasing female
illiteracy. Therefore, CPArts has decided to focus its attention on
liberating women from such negative pressures at least to some extent
and thereby prepare and encourage them to raise a voice on their own
behalf, to discern the good and evil in society, to accept leadership
and to participate in artistic and cultural activities. Through these
efforts, CPArts tries to elevate women’s status in society and
create awareness about the importance of their role and contribution
to society itself
