A Campfire…where Youthful Zeal burned as Brightly

The youth gathered…72 of them, drawn from 17 Regional Centres of CPArts…at the Chinthana Centre, Wennapuwa on December 7th and 8th.

Peace was the theme, as they gathered to share and learn aspects of creating good theatre through a modern theatre workshop and to participate in a discussion panel scenario that examined the subject, “To Create a New World”.

A highlight of the youth meet was the programme put forward by renowned theatre personality Jerome De Silva and his Workshop Players, who conducted the modern theatre workshop. This proved to be an exciting and absorbing experience for the youth, who profited immensely from the various theatre techniques that unfolded before their eyes.

As is customary with all CPArts programmes the youth came together; they bonded; they learnt together; they learnt to move with, co-exist and understand other youth from different backgrounds and circumstances. An invaluable experience. In the end, it was difficult to know which burned more brightly…the campfire or youthful zeal!

Folk Drama Competition

Building capacities and interests beyond the tragedy of war is an integral aim of CPArts.

Thus, it was rewarding to witness the Folk Drama Competition that took place in Jaffna on the 10th December 2007 at the CPArts Centre, Jaffna. The event brought together dramatists from across the Jaffna region.

At the same event, we conducted a school drama competition which ran throughout the day. Prize winners were awarded cash prizes.

We also took the opportunity of felicitating folk drama icons in the region who were honoured through special awards as well.

A special CD was launched, containing 153 folk songs of the Jaffna peninsula
