Motor Bike Peace Yathr(y)a

The Centre for Performing Arts orchestrated an island-wide Motorcycle Peace Yathr(y)a, which took place from the 11 th of May through the 14 th of May. The Peace tour started at one of the CPA centres in Panadura with the finale taking place at CPA Avissawella. The Peace Troupe included 60 Tamil, Sinhala, Muslim and Burger CPA members.

The Motor Bike Peace Yathr(y)a began at the Panadura location at 11:30am on the 11 th of May with the appropriate festivities to mark the occasion. The tour itself moved across the island visiting eight of the twenty CPA centres: Galle , Matara, Hambantota, Monaragala, Haputale, Kandy , Anuradhapura , and finally Avissawella. During these visits, CPA members on the tour along with those at the varying locations took part in events to mark the occasion and their combined dedication to the peace process. One particularly spectacular event was the demonstration of the fantastic visual arts ability of CPA members in Haputale. A women's group from the Monaragala CPA also provided a magnificent display of their handicrafts which are used as income generation.

An additional highlight took place on the 14 th of May as CPA members visited Sri Saranada Buddhist Temple to light 2550 oil lamps. Although this activity was done as a part of the Vesak festival, it was also used by CPA as a symbolic gesture of the dedication to keep the light of peace continually burning. Following this, there was also a Bhajan (Prayer) service in Anuradhapura to continue to commemorate the vital nature of the peace process for not only the members of CPA but for each individual in Sri Lanka as a whole community.

The Centre for Performing Arts uses the arts as a tool for promoting peace and tolerance in its twenty centres across 18 districts on the island. CPA is one of the only fully-integrated arts organizations firmly dedicated to bringing together members from all ethnic, linguistic religious and regional groups across Sri Lanka .
