PASSION PLAY
These
plays were performed 3 locations the cast being CPArts members
from the area. The performances were on a massive scale and were
aimed at reducing the mental trauma of the Tsunami Victims whilst
delivering the religions message.
Mullaitivu-The
play was staged at Iranapala on 10th & 12th March, lasted
for 2 hours. The cast of 150 comprised both CPArts members and
tsunami Victims who were trained by Mr. G P Ferminus, Director
of School of Fine Arts in Jaffna. The 70 feet long stage was constructed
with logs washed ashore from Indonesia by the Tsunami. 15,000
people viewed the play.
Jaffna
The
play was staged at the CPArts Open Air Stage on the 14th, 15th,
17th, 18th, 19th and 20th March. More than 10,000 people attended,
500 Tsunami Victims were allowed free admission. 250 actors
took part and they were trained by Mr. Johnson Rajkumar, one
of the Deputy Directors in CPArts.
A
Danish member of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission in Jaffna
commented that the trainers and coordinators of the play seen
to be very gifted people considering the large numbers of actors,
high standard of stage arrangement, choreography of the dances
beauty of the costumes etc and that under normal circumstances
it would have taken one year for its preparation.
Puttalam
The
play was staged at Kattaikadu, St.Xaveri’s Church Open
Air Stage on the 19th of March. 90 actors trained by Mr. Antony
Rajan, Drama Trainer took part. There were 3,500 spectators
from the following villages:- Udappu, Chinappadu, Arachikattu
and Mundal. Puttalam CPArts members made the long journey to
Muttur in Trincomalee District on the 22nd and performed the
play as a therapeutic measure to enable the Tsunami Victims
to reduce their mental trauma. 3,500 people viewed the play.

Training for Youth as Zones of Peace [YZOP]
Venue
: Wherehena Training Centre, Matara.

Participants : 38 boys and girls of the YZOP from 9 districts
Trainers : Mr.Solomentine, Programme Officer, Mr. A.Lathislas
and 5 Resource Persons
Programme:
Daily routine: Wake-up call 5.30a.m, followed by tea, warm up
exercise, meditation and breakfast. The main programme started
at 9.00am daily. Theatre games were performed on all 3 days in
order to enable the participants to shed their shyness mix up
with others from different districts and develop their own initiatives
and personalities.
They
were trained in the techniques of producing a drama that could
be recorded for the radio. The theory and practice of Sinhala
Traditional dance, techniques of using make-up, principles of
type, color etc of costumes were explained and demonstrated. The
history and development of Sinhala music was elucidated and musical
items performed.
The
group visited the Tsunami Relief Camp at Kithulwela, Matara and
interacted with the young people their numbering about 50. Music,
art, dance and Theatre games therapies were conducted to reduce
their mental trauma. Trainers were given the opportunity to apply
their knowledge. The Matara CPArts was invited by the Camp manager
to visit the camp once a week and held similar programme
