Commemorating the Passion of Lord Jesus
Each year, the Christian community comes together to reflect on and commemorate the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

In an unbroken cycle spanning 20 years, CPArts Jaffna and Colombo have commemorated this integral moment of Christian faith, through the staging of special Passion Plays.

This year, ‘Kaviya Nayagan’ (Lord of History) was staged over 4 days at CPArts’ open air theatre in Jaffna, whilst in Colombo, another dramatic presentation ‘Siluvayadiyil’ went on the boards at the Tower Hall Theatre, Colombo. The latter production featured the talent and effort of children and youth from our Centre at Avissawella.

In Jaffna, the drama featured an interesting and different take on certain characters including the theological approach. Also, the event was held amidst curfew conditions that prevailed in Jaffna, and was distinguished by the excellent attendance.

The Voice of Women…A plea to be heard…

International Women’s Day was commemorated on 8th March this year.

In Colombo, a 20 minute playlet titled ‘Our Women’ dealing with issues such as gender inequality, eve-teasing and cultural taboos regarding women, was staged at Tamil Sangam on this day.

On the same day, CPArts Panadura staged a play titled ‘Viyalee Seethala’ at the Sarvodaya Samadhi Hall, Moratuwa. Here too, topical issues concerning women, such as trafficking in women, exploitation of women through prostitution and domestic violence were featured.

Both dramas were very well received by an enraptured audience.
